a rocket, a scream, a child
One of my favorite artists is Karel Appel. In 1953, he said: My paint is like a rocket, which describes its own space… I never try to make a painting, but a chunk of life. It is a scream; it is a night; it is like a child; it is a tiger behind bars…”
My fall classes at the Center For Maine Contemporary Art are about to begin. My approach to working with kids in an art studio is more influenced by art and artists I love, than any one philosophy about art education. Above all, it’s clear to me that my job is to create a space where anything can happen: a rocket, a scream, a tiger…
It’s about creating space…
Above is a photograph from one of my past projects at the Starrett Children’s Center. I wallpapered a small room and added a few visual prompts. A line, a dot, a shape, a pattern.
Kids were given markers and free reign.
Sometimes it’s more about the process than the product…
There’s still room for sign-ups in my classes. I’d love to see you there!
